Austin Jury Vindicates Trump Supporters in Landmark Free Speech Case

Updated: Oct 2

AUSTIN, Texas - In a decisive victory for political expression, an Austin jury has exonerated Pastor Steve Ceh, his wife Randi Ceh, and three co-defendants of allegations stemming from a 2020 pro-Trump caravan. The case, which arose from an encounter with a Biden campaign bus, has shed light on what many see as a dangerous trend of using the legal system to suppress political expression.

Citizens Defending Freedom (CDF), a staunch advocate for constitutional rights, played a pivotal role in this legal battle. After Pastor Ceh sought help following a Texas Remnant Alliance event in August, CDF swiftly mobilized, engaging the Alexandria, Virginia-based conservative law firm Binnall Law Group and the public interest firm Remnant Law. Despite less than two weeks to prepare for trial, the legal team mounted a robust defense.

Jason Greaves, a partner at Binnall Law and lead counsel for the Cehs, declared the verdict a triumph over what he termed "lawfare" - the weaponization of legal processes for political ends. "This case exemplifies how Wendy Davis and the progressive lawfare machine targeted and attempted to ruin the lives of ordinary Americans," Greaves stated. "Their only 'crime' was demonstrating support for President Trump by flying Trump flags on the highway and giving a Texas welcome to the Biden/Harris campaign bus."

Greaves further exposed the weakness of the plaintiffs' case: "The lawsuit was based on an a fatally flawed legal theory. Despite investing significant funds in a multinational law firm, forensic specialists, private investigators, and expensive so-called ‘expert’ witnesses- including an expert previously involved in efforts to remove Trump from Colorado ballots - the plaintiffs failed to produce evidence of wrongdoing for almost all the defendants."

Martin Etwop of Remnant Law highlighted the case's chilling implications: "After all their resources and efforts, the only 'evidence' they could muster was innuendo and insinuation. This is incredibly dangerous. It would have set a precedent where anyone's political expression could be grounds for a ruinous lawsuit."

CDF argues that the lawsuit, while unsuccessful, achieved certain political goals by intimidating Trump supporters and generating negative pre-election publicity. The organization views this as part of a broader pattern of using legal mechanisms to interfere with the electoral process and suppress dissenting voices.

"This case should be a wake-up call," Etwop added. "This is not just about Trump supporters; it's about the fundamental right of all Americans to express their political views without fear of legal persecution. The selective application of laws to silence certain political expressions threatens the very foundation of our republic."

While celebrating the defendants' vindication, CDF expressed concern for the personal and financial toll exacted by the lengthy legal battle. The organization sees this case as emblematic of a troubling trend where political differences are increasingly settled in courtrooms rather than at ballot boxes.

Looking ahead, CDF reaffirms its commitment to defending First Amendment rights against what it perceives as politically motivated legal attacks. The organization calls on all Americans, regardless of political affiliation, to recognize the dangers posed by such lawfare tactics and to stand united in defense of free speech and political expression.

As this case concludes, it leaves behind crucial questions about the intersection of law, politics, and civil liberties in America. CDF vows to remain vigilant, ready to challenge any future attempts to use the legal system as a tool for political intimidation or suppression of constitutional rights.
