CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Citizens Defending Freedom (CDF) commends the Calallen School District Board for their recent decision to implement a new safety policy that aligns with Texas education code, state law, and the original language of Title IX. This policy change comes after concerns were raised about the district's previous practices regarding facility use based on gender identity.
Key points of the situation and resolution:
1. A concerned school board member alerted CDF to issues regarding biological males using female facilities, including restrooms and locker rooms.
2. The district administration had been making decisions on a "case-by-case" basis, citing a need to accommodate students based on their expressed comfort levels.
3. CDF provided the board with accurate information regarding current Texas law and Attorney General Ken Paxton's guidance on these matters.
4. The board voted to implement a new policy that prioritizes student safety and privacy while adhering to Texas law.
5. The new policy also includes protections for teachers, allowing them to use different names or genders than those on birth certificates only at parental request, with the option to decline based on personal values and beliefs.
Nueces County CDF Executive Director Victoria Holland said, "We are pleased to see the Calallen School District Board take decisive action to protect the privacy and safety of all students. This policy change demonstrates a commitment to following Texas law and respecting the rights of students and teachers alike."
The organization emphasizes that the new policy:
Aligns with Texas Education Code and state law
Adheres to the original intent of Title IX
Protects the privacy and safety of all students
Respects parental rights and teacher autonomy
CDF remains committed to working with school districts across Texas to ensure that policies protect all students while complying with state and federal laws.
