Citizens Defending Freedom Opposes New Gender Identity and Sexual Orientation Categories on Federal Survey

Updated: Sep 27

MULBERRY, Fla – Citizens Defending Freedom (CDF) submitted a formal comment in opposition to the U.S. Census Bureau’s adding of “sexual orientation” and “gender identity” to the American Community Survey (ACS). Approximately 3.5 million (about 1 in 38) U.S. households per year are asked to participate in the ACS. If the Biden Administration gets its way, these homes will be asked about the sexual identities of everyone in the house as young as 15.

Under Biden’s Executive Order 14075, the Census Bureau has been instructed to collect these intrusive personal details under the guise of addressing “discrimination and barriers that LGBTQI+ individuals and families face”. The stated goal is to expand federal subsidies for so-called “healthcare” and housing. This includes “expanding access” to sex change surgeries. The ACS is used to determine funding for 675 billion taxpayer dollars.

Concerns and Opposition:

CDF’s Public Comment to the Census Bureau highlights several critical issues with these proposed changes:

1. Legitimizing Gender Identity Ideology: The addition of categories such as “assigned at birth” and options for various gender identities and sexual orientations supports the false idea that gender is separate from biological sex, an unscientific and politicized concept.

2. Targeting Minors: The ACS seeks information on people as young as 15, making the inclusion of minors in these categories both concerning and statistically misleading. Recent studies show many adolescents outgrow gender confusion within a few years.

3. Impact on Minors: Including minors in these questions could have psychological implications and mislead young people into believing that gender identity is fluid and government-endorsed.

4. Cost of Altering the Survey: The cost to change the survey is around $10 million. This expense comes in addition to how it may erroneously influence the allocation of 675 billion taxpayer dollars.

Alternative Solution:

CDF supports the concerns raised by Senators Marco Rubio and J.D. Vance in their recent letter to the US Census Bureau. Instead of these changes, CDF proposes the Census Bureau could collect data on gender dysphoria, providing valuable insights into mental health needs without endorsing unscientific ideologies. This approach would maintain the ACS’s objectivity and better serve its purpose of informing resource distribution.
