Citizens Defending Freedom Scores Decisive Victory for First Amendment Rights

Updated: Oct 2

FORT WORTH, Texas - Citizens Defending Freedom (CDF) proudly announces a resounding triumph for religious liberty and free speech in the case of Duante Newton, a young street preacher who faced unjust persecution for proclaiming his faith.

In a clear rebuke to those who would silence Christian voices, a jury acquitted Mr. Newton of all charges stemming from his peaceful preaching at the Fort Worth Stockyards. This verdict reaffirms that the First Amendment is not mere suggestion, but the bedrock of American liberty.

When 19-year-old Newton was wrongfully cited for "disturbing the peace" while sharing the Gospel, CDF swiftly acted, connecting him with Remnant Law, a public interest law firm that represents the public on matters of religious liberty and constitutional rights. This strategic partnership resulted in a complete vindication of Mr. Newton's constitutional rights.

"This case exposes a troubling trend of hostility towards public expressions of faith," declared Rosalie Marie Escobedo, CDF Executive Director. "The notion that Christians 'belong only in church' is not just misguided—it's unconstitutional. This verdict sends a clear message: the public square remains open to all voices, including Christian ones."

The prosecution's weak case crumbled under scrutiny. Despite claims of "unnecessary noise," no evidence showed Newton exceeded legal decibel limits. Meanwhile, the Stockyards' own cattle drives created far more commotion without complaint.

"If the Stockyards believe Christians only belong in a church, perhaps our money doesn't belong in their businesses," added Melinda Preston, executive director of CDF-Denton County, highlighting the potential economic impact of religious discrimination.

This victory serves as a warning to overzealous officials and anti-Christian elements alike: CDF stands ready to defend religious liberty with unwavering resolve. We will not stand idle while the constitutional rights of believers are trampled.

Remnant Law General Counsel Jonathan Hullihan said, “We’re just going to keep going out there, defending religious liberty, religious belief and freedom of speech. So it’s another good day in America.”

Mr. Newton's powerful statement after the verdict encapsulates the importance of this fight: "The reason why I'm here is bigger than me; it's bigger than all of us. I just wanted to go out there and give the message of Jesus."

Citizens Defending Freedom remains committed to ensuring that voices like Duante Newton's continue to ring out freely across America. We call on all who cherish liberty to join us in this crucial battle for the soul of our nation.
